Chapter 9

The next morning, Norene stumbled from her room and when Mercy asked about her evening, she sniffed. “Trevor got a headache and went home early. So I stayed and closed down the Swamp Bar.”

Mercy looked across the breakfast table to see Huey’s reaction, but he didn’t appear upset. Mercy tried to imagine her parents’ reaction if she went out boozing by herself, to a joint like the Swamp Bar. They sure wouldn’t be calmly trying to balance fried eggs on their toast, like Huey was. Then his egg slipped off, and he glared.

“Stupid eggs!”

“Can I help?” she asked. “Maybe if you fold your toast. Like this.” She demonstrated with her own food and he nodded, so she added another egg to his toast and folded it before handing it to him.

“That’s very thoughtful,” he said, casting an eye at Norene.

“Thank you. Norene, what are you wearing tonight?” Mercy asked, not wanting her to get mad and back out of the planned date.

“What’s your cousin’s favorite color?”

Oh, boy. Mercy rubbed her head. “I’m not sure. Do you have something in mind?”

“I’ve got a new black dress,” Norene said. “But we need to match! Do you have a black dress?”

“No—”

Norene stood and pushed her plate. “Then we have to go shopping! Pops, will you be okay for a while?”

Mercy firmly vetoed Norene’s proposal. She’d seen enough of her clothes to realize she didn’t want to shop at the stores Norene favored. Besides, she wouldn’t leave Huey by himself for that long.

Norene plunked back onto her chair. “Fine. But I’ve got Spandex dresses that are a size too small, so you can wear one of them.”

Mercy tried to think of a way out of the dilemma but short of leaving Huey and dumping Norene, there wasn’t much she could do. Not to mention, her spending budget was a vacuum. When she began wondering what Gertie had in her closet, she mentally slapped herself. Gertie’s eveningwear could very well be worse than Norene’s!

That afternoon she sent Loyal a text and warned him he’d better not stand her up. He promised that he would be there and offered to swing by to pick the women up. Since Mercy had no doubt Norene would get bombed, she agreed. That way Loyal could help get Norene into the house when the evening ended.

Just after an early supper, Mercy answered the door, puzzled to see Robert Graham. “Is everything okay?” she asked.

“Yeah. Could we take a short drive? There’s something I want to discuss with you.”

“Is it about your mother?” He nodded, and Mercy said, “Let me check if it’s okay to leave for a bit.”

“Just don’t take too long,” Norene warned when Mercy asked if she’d keep an eye on her father. “We still have to pick a dress for you to wear tonight.”

“I’ll be quick,” Mercy promised. She joined Robert in his car, and he started the engine. “Why don’t we talk right here,” she suggested.

He shook his head and drove them out of town.

“How far are we going?”

Robert glanced at her.
